This year Jingles Bait and Tackle was giving a prize for the 60th bass caught in the 60th year of the Classic in Memory of Jingles (Robert O'Brien) and in memory of my son Rick.
Like many prizes this was prizes was not given away. After much thought what I decided to do was to purchase toys at our local Hand Store and donate them to Toys for Tots. The Beach Haven Police Department is collecting for them.
These toys will be being going to young people and will make their Holiday brighter. Thank you all that fished in the Classic this year as you made this possible.
As a member of the LBI Surf Fishing Classic committee and one of the shops that is a weigh-in for the tournament I would like to thank everyone that participated in the tournament this year.
I would also like to thank all of our sponsors and also thank those that have donated some of the most spectacular Special Prizes that we have ever had in the tournament.
The "Derby" holds a lot of good times and great memories for me.
Jingles did not catch big fish but he caught a lot of fish. For those of you that did not know him he was a guy that threw small plugs and did not bait fish. He won the Derby for most fish and even went to court because someone thought he caught to many fish. That was when you had residents against non residents competing for prizes. He won a few weekly's but never the big one when it came to bass.
My kids grew up fishing in Holgate and at the age of 13 my son Rick won the 25th year of the tournament with a 19-9 bluefish that was caught on a black redfin at 5 in the morning and then got on the bus and went to school.
When weakfish were put in this tournament it was like this fish was put in for the O'Brien family. My youngest son Tooter at the age of 11 tied one year with Bert Harper with 2 weakfish over 14 pounds. Tooter lost out because of time of catch. Derby time was the time to be on the beach so for Ricks 21st birthday ( Oct 19th ) the party was on the beach.
It is hard to believe it has been 10 years since Rick won the 50th year of the Derby with his 41-7 bass that he caught at the end of his own street. I remember Rick saying to me how ironic to win the 25th and the 50th years of this tournament. Both of these fish hang proudly in the store.
Jingles passed away in 1996 and Rick in 2008 both of them way to early in their lives.
This year instead of giving a Memorial Award for each of them I am giving $500 in their honor to the angler that catches the 60th striped bass in this 60th year of this tournament.
When the time comes for the 60th fish if there are more than 1 fish that day it will go by time caught
I know if they were here today they would be out there on the beach fishing.
Good luck to all fishing the 60th year of this tournament.
9/29 One week away.
Have you signed up yet for the Surf LBI Surf Fishing Classic? Remember this tournament starts on Monday October 6th at 5 am and the largest bass that day wins 500 dollars. Not bad for a 30 dollar investment.
More than likely there will be no tackle shops open at 5 am so you don't want to be on the beach fishing and catch a fish and not be in it so sign up now. The first fish caught in the tournament this year will win a head lamp from Princeton Tec. plus there are your daily prizesfor bluefish and bass.
If there is no bass caught the 1st day the 500 dollars will go on till some one has the largest bass. It could be the 1st day of maybe the third.
9/15 We are 3 week away from the start of the 60th LBI Surf Fishing Classic. There are some great prizes in to be given out this year. There are extra money prizes such as $500 for the largest bass on opening day. TFO is giving away a 4 rods this year. These rods will be given on ...TFO Tuesdays. Oct 14th, 28, Nov 11th and 25th. TFO days and will be given to the largest blue fish. If prize is not won it will go to the next day till we have a winner. Sportfish Products is giving a lure bag filled with their lures to an angler that catches a fish in each segment. This prize will be a random pick from all that catch a fish in a 2 week period. Local business' are giving gift certificates. If you haven't signed up it is time before you forget of before you catch a prize winning fish.
We need to keep this tournament going and with your help we can. There are no mailings to tell you about it. We need those that fish it to tell there friends and get them to join.
Will we ever seen 2500 anglers in it again? The last few years there have been a lot more people surf fishing so if everyone got one friend to join it would be great.
How many of you caught a fish with a spot on its tail last year and said what is this? Some knew they had caught a red drum.
In the State of New Jersey you are allowed to keep 1 at 18" but not greater than 27"
This year if you catch the first Legal one entered into the Classic you will win $100 cash. Make sure you sign up early in order to qualify for this prize.

The bluefish size limit in 2014 has also been dropped to 30 inches to encourage ‘chopper’ entries.
